Film Analysis: Never Say Never

I started watching the documentary Never Say Never with the intent to just make fun
Justin Bieber, instead I did just the opposite and found that he actually has talent and it was that
talent that helped him achieve his dream. The filmmakers accurately portrayed the theme of
“never say never” through visual effects, the use of music, and narration, and through the
character development of Justin Bieber.

The movie begins with the image of a clear and distinct layout of a mac computer screen.
You see someone open up their e-mail and start watching Youtube videos. They come across one
of Justin's videos named, “With You - Chris Brown Cover - Justin Singing.” As the song plays in
the background, you see flashes of Justin’s rise to fame—from childhood to his teen years. Then
the screen goes white and the words “This is His Story,” appear. The makers of the film instantly
hook the audience with a fuzzy YouTube video and glimpses of what seems to be the impossible
—a little boy becoming a star simply because he posted a few videos online. This was one of
many visual effects used throughout the movie to show the audience that the “impossible” can be
and was achieved by Justin Bieber.

The majority of the movie is a mix of concert scenes of Justin on tour and narration told
through interviews of the people who know him best—his friends and family. These interviews
make Justin seem like any normal kid. They show that Justin grew up living a regular life, raised
by a single mother. They show that any other kid, even if they aren’t coming from ideal
circumstances, can achieve their goals and dreams as long as they chase after them and work
hard—as long as they “never say never.”

During the entire movie there were Justin Bieber songs playing in the background. These
songs played a great part in telling his story and and making it interesting. For example, there is a
song “Never Say Never” toward the end of the movie. This is the pinnacle of the movie, what the
whole thing is named after, and what the entire theme of the movie is based on. A scene is shown
during his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. The camera is following Justin under the
stage as he nears the opening where he will rise to meet the crowd and as his song plays in the
background, a quote from Justin Bieber speaking to the crowd about how you can’t let the world
get you down, that you have to follow your dreams, that you can “never say never.” The sound
and the effects evoke an emotion that makes the viewer feel the impact of that moment in Justin’s
life. They truly make the viewer feel that the impossible is possible.

One of the most important aspects of this movie is showing the theme of “never say
never” through the growth and character development of Justin Bieber himself. This character
development is shown through the interviews and music, as mentioned earlier, but it is also
shown through great editing. The entire movie is filled with flashbacks and glimpses forward,
showing direct correlation between the hard work Justin put in when he was a child and the fame
he achieved as a teenager. There is one scene in particular that shows Justin going from radio
station to radio station all across the country, trying to get his music heard and known. This scene
really illustrated who Justin was—a hardworking kid with a dream. It helped the viewer to see
that it was through Justin’s character, who he was as a person, that made the impossible possible.

“Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never” was a movie about dreams becoming reality. Justin’s story was told through great narration, music, editing, and visual effects. All of these elements
helped illustrate the theme of “never say never.”
